Drawing Storytelling

Darb1718 Workshop

Storytelling is an art that comes to life through many forms of visual arts, where illustrations and comics are the most popular; even as they vary in how they are carried out.

In this workshop, we will focus on a collection of short stories by author Mahmoud Taymour, inspired by the suburbs of Cairo and Alexandria between the 1920s and 1940s. All these subsequent stories will be converted into a graphic format via illustrations and into a comic layout.

Throughout the stages of the workshop, each step will be explained and analyzed over eight meetings, twice per week for a full month. Each meeting will have a duration of six hours; from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

First Week:

+Introducing and presenting types and schools of graphic storytelling, and various  drawing techniques.

+Introducing Taymour’s collection of short stories, on which the workshop is based

Second Week:

+ Describing visual tools, used to convert the stories, through the use of cadre, color, art lines, composition, and character design.

Third Week:

+Demonstrating the various drawing, inking and coloring techniques and applications for execution.

Fourth Week:

+Finalizing the last stages of the project on one-on-one bases.

+Projecting different styles of pictured publications, and attempting to duplicate some of them.

Each participant will have to bring their own art tools in line with the technique used; pens, digital drawing, collage, etc.
