Mamela Nyamza (South Africa):
One of South Africa’s most respected young choreographers presents a work that considers the universal subjects of cooking, eating, and love, and the way that creativity can transform instruments of oppression into expressions of beauty.
Born in Cape Town, Mamela Nyamza received a diploma in Ballet, and received a scholarship to continue her studies in dance at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center of New York. After graduation she joined the State Theater Dance Company of Johannesburg, which took her around the world as a performer. Since then, she has performed in major international musicals, festivals and tours, as well as developing her own award-winning choreography that has been shown in the US, Europe and throughout Africa. One of South Africa’s most respected choreographers, she received the Standard Bank Young Artist Award in Dance in 2011.
