In the discourse on birth and motherhood, medical complications and other difficulties regarding female fertility are often only discussed in private, closed to the outside. After her own complicated journey with fertility and motherhood, Egyptian theatre director Laila Soliman decided to bring women’s stories to the stage. In STORY OF…, dancer Sherin Hegazy weaves a delicate dialogue with words and images of women sharing their personal experiences of motherhood, from pain and loneliness to joy and strength. Through pelvis and belly movements, the piece combines contemporary dance and belly dance, an artform which traditionally celebrates fertility and joy. Yet, through the unusual instrumentation of multi-instrumentalist Nancy Mounir, those emotions shift – towards pain, grief, and resistance.

هناك حكايات عن الأمومة لا تجد طريقها إلى العلن، لتظل حبيسة الأحاديث الخاصة، وتغيب عن النقاشات المتعلقة بالولادة والأمومة، مثل المضاعفات الطبية وغيرها من الصعوبات المرتبطة بخصوبة المرأة. انطلاقا من رحلتها الشخصية المعقدة مع الخصوبة والأمومة، قررت المخرجة المسرحية المصرية ليلى سليمان نقل حكايات النساء المسكوت عنها إلى خشبة المسرح. في عرض «STORY OF…»، تنسج الراقصة شيرين حجازي حوارًا رقيقًا مع كلمات وصور لنساء يشاركن تجاربهن الشخصية مع الأمومة، من الألم والوحدة إلى الفرح والقوة. ومن خلال حركات الحوض والبطن، يمزج العرض بين الرقص المعاصر والرقص الشرقي—وهو الفنٌّ الذي ارتبط منذ بدايته بالاحتفاء بالخصوبة والفرح. ولكن من خلال التوزيع الموسيقي الفريد للموسيقية متعددة الآلات نانسي منير، تتحول هذه المشاعر نحو الألم والحداد والمقاومة.
