Noura Mint Seymali (Mauritania)

Noura Mint Seymali began her career as a backing vocalist with Dimi Mint Abbas at the age of 13. She formed an ensemble that uses traditional instruments at its core: harp, flute, and bowl drum with Western bass and drum-set.
Arranging for a contemporary ensemble, Noura was able to blend her traditional Mauritanian music with sounds from outside—reggae, blues, hip hop, zouk.
Noura has performed at many international festivals including Festival au-Desert (Mali), Festival Pirineos (Spain), and Festival Timitar (Morocco). Noura’s songs address such prescient topics as the role of women in Islamic society, desertification, economic development, and terrorism in the Magreb, she also presents love songs, devotional hymns of praise, and historical folk narratives.
